How To Wire Up A Light Switch With Neon Indicator
Ok as you say with one way switch since the neon is in series with the lamp and passes enough current to light up without affecting the main light.
How to wire up a light switch with neon indicator. I need to fit a neon indicator switch in place of an ordinary light switch. Can someone please help me with wiring a light switch with a neon light. If you want a neon to come on when the switch is on however you do need a neutral. It will not be possible to safely wire up a neon indicator when there is just a switch loop pair at the switch location.
Dodgydave came up with one answer is to wire the neon across the switch it will light when the switch is off you can get small panel mount types used in appliances such as freezers etc. I have placed the 2 wires that come off the neon light both small black wires in the switch one with the brown wire and and one with the blue wire but the neon light is permantley on the switch neon not the the actuall light when the switch is off. The ones that light up when switched off do not need a neutral the neon is wired in paralle to the switch so when switch is off a small current neons draw fek all flows through the neon and to neutral via the lamp. When the switch is on the neon is effectively shorted so goes out.
The existing light switch has one cable coming out of the back box it is 2 core earth i have a live neutral and earth. Unfortunately there is only one wire to and from the switch plus an earth. In order to get it to work the way you want it will be necessary to run a replacement power cable from the light location to the switch that contains a neutral wire in addition to the two wires for the switch loop. As has been said on here before some low energy mini fluorescent lamps can still flicker glow once they have been on as the neon leakage current is almost enough to relight them.
The basic type of pilot neon light switch can be wires same as combo of switch and outlet device as shown in fig below. The hot wire can be connected to the single brass or gold terminal instead of both terminals. I tried tapping into the line controlled by the float i cut the line to the pump and put in a junction box to house the cut wires but the light comes on whenever there is power to the pump regardless if it is running or not. I have a 240v effluent pump controlled by a float switch i would like to wire it to a night light inside my cabin to indicate whenever the pump is running.
Morning all i have purchased a light switch which has a small neon light built in showing me when the outside light is on or off.
