Wall Wiring
Start in an area on the wall that is close to a switch or outlet move the detector up the wall and mark the wall to form a trace line of where the electrical wire is located as the detector beeps.
Wall wiring. In wall speaker wire is identified in shorthand that indicates its gauge thickness and its number of strands or conductors as they re known in the trade. Clamp the wire and replace the receptacle into the wall. The lower the gauge number the thicker the wire. When the toggle is flipped down the circuit is broken and the power goes off.
A single pole wall switch usually has a lever or toggle that completes the circuit when it is flipped up to turn a light device or appliance on. Turn the electronic stud wire finder on and slowly move it left and right until the detector beeps indicating it has found an electrical wire. Run the wire from the existing outlet behind the wall using the notches and up into the new box. How to run electrical wire.
Single pole switches have 2 brass terminal screws on the side and newly purchased switches usually have a ground wire. Once it emerges from the other hole fasten a length of electrical wire to the fish tape and pull it back toward the first hole. Advertisement if you re going to use the method of switching the circuit breakers on and off keep in mind that you ll be in the dark as you move from one location to another. These instructions assume that there is a closed wall between the service panel and the device that will be wired up.
Finish reassembling all of the hardware before turning the power back on and testing the current to be sure the wiring is working properly. 16 2 is 16 gauge wire with 2 conductors. 14 4 is 14 gauge wire with 4 conductors. Once back at the first hole disconnect the wire from the tape.
Speaker wire gauge and conductors. Never reach into wall or floor spaces if you re not sure whether the wires behind them are live and use nonconductive tools when working on wiring.
